As soon as I get a table saw I plan on doing some acrylic fabrication tutorials on the site.

The red slime is cyanobacteria. Here are a few links for some more info -

My guess is that the crab looks like a carnivore from what I can tell. Would need a better pic. It is probably a good idea to remove it.

The frogspawn is looking very healthy!

The plastics distributor near me only carries 1/2" and 3/4" thick sheets so I'm not sure that acrylite GP comes in 5/8" thick. Other brands might come in that size.

Symbiosis 03-10-2006 10:20 PM

I want to do a 75 or 90 gallon with acrylic. Not sure if I would need 3/8 or 1/2 though. Someone told me 3/8 for the 75, but def. 1/2 for a 90.

FragOutpost 03-10-2006 10:55 PM

Personally i would go 1/2", but I tend to overbuild things. With good bracing on the top you could probably get by with 3/8". What is the height? A standard 75 gallon is around 18-20" tall. Water pressure increases exponentially as the tank gets taller.

jaydsl 03-10-2006 10:57 PM

i alway think when in dout over kill it go with 1/2 better safe then sorry i think i will go with 3/4 but at 800$ us a sheet :(

and thanks for info frag- the crab has never harmed any thing but i have made shure to always keep him happy he now comes out at feeding time with the eel and fish maybe i will keep feeding him and one day i can have a crab dinner :)

Yeah, maybe ill just go with 1/2 and make a 90. Never can have enough water! I read somewhere to only use cell-cast acrylic for tanks, but the distributor near me only sells acrylite FF which says its extruded, but also goes by cast. Im confused. 3/4 inch is like 12.10 a square foot. Yikes.

FragOutpost 03-10-2006 11:05 PM

$800 seems a bit steep. Are you getting this price from a local plastics supplier? My local plastics supplier has .708 thick Acrylite GP listed at 14.02 per sq ft on their website. Although I'm not sure how accurate the price is or how often they update their website price list. But $14.02 X 32 sq ft = $448.64 per sheet.

I'd keep an eye on the crab and keep him well fed if you plan to keep him. Although it would be high on my list of suspects if something was to get eaten. Maybe he would taste good with some lemon butter sauce! :D

I was just about to read a few pages of Calfo's book and go to bed but I'll hop in the chat room for a few. Give me a minute to fire up the laptop.

Symbiosis 03-10-2006 11:09 PM

A 1 inch 48" x 120" sheet would only be $640.80 fom interstate plastics. *00 does seem a little steep for 3/4. Unless you're buying a massive sheet of course.

FragOutpost 03-10-2006 11:09 PM

FF is extruded and the 1/4" is great for building small sumps and fuges but I would not recommend for anything under a lot of water pressure. Definitely go for cell cast when building a tank.
