A good alternative to a expensive berlin sump is a Walmart Aqua-Tech 10 gallon aquarium.

I set up my own Walmart Aqua-Tech 10 gallon aquarium sump on my 55 reef tank.

Heres how I did it:

Materials:

Walmart Aqua-Tech 10 gallon aquarium (test some water in it first for leaks)
egg crates (light deffisuser grids) from Homedepot ect.
Filter felt material (or something to match it or exceed it)

Procedure:

1. Locate a spot where the Walmart Aqua-Tech 10 gallon aquarium can be fitted under your aquarium.

2. Cut egg crate approiate size to fit into your Walmart Aqua-Tech 10 gallon aquarium. (This will slip into the sump and later will be covered by filter felt.)

3. Secure filter felt around the eggcrate.

4. Put that huge filter back into your Walmart Aqua-Tech 10 gallon aquarium sump.

5. Run your sump as you would have. (Make sure you make adjust ments to the sump, watch how much water is in there. You do not want to run your pumps dry)

It's way cheaper alternative to buying a 200 $ plus sump.

You can put anything it it, skimmers, reactors, extra pumps, but it is a tight fit!

Fight the aquarium buisness trade. Make your own stuff and make them drop the prices!

I agree, that is a good tip. It is not necessary to purchase an expensive prebuilt sump.

I use a $8 rubbermaid container for my refugium and it works great.
